However, this was not convincing for many. Lena Dunham, the epitome of this sentiment, literally tweeted “Can someone tell me whether we’re supposed to be offended by Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Tonto or not?” Depp had come out saying that he was part Native American and that he wanted to “reinvent” Native depiction in pop culture.
DID JOHNNY DEPP RUIN LONE RANGER HOW TO
When news was first released that Depp would be taking on the role of Tonto, people were unsure how to feel about it. Johnny Depp sits at the center of said controversies. However, unlike my first viewing where I watched merely for the “fun” of it, on my second screening I was much more engaged as I was trying to understand the multiple controversies surrounding the film. I knew what I was committing the next 150 minutes of my time to, and although it remains a bad movie, I enjoyed it at least a bit more. The second time, knowing it sucked, I went in more openly (surprisingly). Īs you may be able to assume, it was not so. The first time I saw the movie willingly, thinking it looked entertaining and potentially like the next Pirates of the Caribbean.

I have now seen it twice–once in the theaters and once for this post. However, unlike Pocahontas, there is nothing redeeming about the movie. Disney’s The Lone Ranger, like Pocahontas, receives stark criticism from critics, for both the film itself and Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Tonto.
